Most of the 55 U.S. jurisdictions require that architects earn continuing education before each license renewal. Check your jurisdiction’s requirements. To help architectural licensing boards, architects, continuing education (CE) providers, and CE accreditors better understand what qualifies as health, safety, and welfare (HSW), NCARB has published Continuing Education Guidelines. The document outlines the subjects or topics that learning programs must address to be considered HSW CE.
Thanks to our exclusive Continuum Education Program, you can easily earn the learning unit (LU) credits you need to update your professional skills and maintain your license. By completing our online courses and accompanying quizzes and exercises, you can earn LUs in HSW from the comfort of your own home, office, or mobile device.
Free Continuing Education
Continue developing your professional skills by completing self-study courses on topics like fire safety, professional conduct, and building performance. Our free courses offer architects an independent, cost-effective way to earn learning units in HSW at their own convenience.
Every Continuum Education course includes a short article and related quiz, offering 1 to 2.5 AIA HSW LUs. The majority of our courses are part of a multi-part series, written by recognized experts, allowing you to dig deep into a topic.
All CE courses are free for NCARB Certificate holders and licensure candidates with active NCARB Records. The courses are also available for purchase by individuals without an active NCARB Record.
How to Earn LUs:
- If you’re an NCARB Certificate holder, you’ll receive an email notification about the latest CE courses each month, or you can browse our collection of Continuum Education courses.
- After you download your selected course, you are eligible to take the quiz. Take the quiz by logging in to your My NCARB account, selecting “Monograph,” and choosing the “take a quiz” button next to the course. You can also go to “My CE” to see only the list of courses you have chosen. Note: You’ll need to “purchase” a course by filling in your ”billing address” before taking the quiz. However, if you have an active NCARB Record the “cost” will be zero dollars.
- You’ll see your results immediately and will have the option to either print your certificate of completion or retake the quiz. For AIA members, your passing score is automatically reported.

In addition, NCARB offers reference copies of our discontinued long-format continuing education materials. While these are no longer eligible for AIA continuing education credit as of September 1, 2019, they continue to serve as valuable reference material.
